How to Choose the Right OUMO Shaving Brush for You

1. Introduction & Credentials

1.1 Why hasn't OUMO published a buying guide before?

We assumed this hobby has a learning curve, and that most people would have done their research before stepping into artisan-grade brushes. But lately, more newcomers are joining, and facing our system-driven brand, they can feel lost. So now feels like the right time.

1.2 Who wrote this guide, and why should I trust it?

I'm Carry. I've been wet shaving for over a decade, before OUMO even existed. Since 2015, I've personally used well over a thousand brushes. OUMO also collects feedback from the global community. Combine that with my own experience, and I believe I can offer you a genuinely useful reference.

2. Knot Basics: Types & Selection

2.1 What types of shaving knots does OUMO offer?

Four types:

  • Hog Badger – strong backbone, balanced performance
  • Dog Badger – softer, more luxurious feel
  • Bristle – more resilient, precise, affordable
  • Synthetic – easy to lather, low maintenance, long lifespan, various textures, great value

2.2 How do I choose among them?

Start by picking which category appeals to you. Each type behaves differently. Within each type, we offer multiple grades based on raw material tier. Price reflects scarcity, but more expensive doesn't automatically mean better for you.

2.3 What determines a knot's performance besides material grade?

Tuning matters just as much—density, bleaching level, bleaching method, selection process. Craftsmanship often affects the final feel more than the material itself. The material sets the ceiling; the craft decides how close you get.

3. Technical Specifications & Adjustments

3.1 Why did OUMO change knot sizes from 22-24-26-28-30 to 21-23-25-27-29 mm?

Because of a common misunderstanding. Hand-tied knots and traditional glued knots are measured differently. Hand-tied knots have only basic reinforcement at the base; glued knots have a glue base matching their nominal size. People assume the glue base diameter equals the knot size, but the real measure is the hair bundle.

Badger hair is thickest at the waist, narrower at the base. A knot that reaches 28 mm at the waist may measure 0.1–0.3 mm smaller at the base. Hand-tied knots measure pure hair, not glue. To avoid confusion, we down-sized our labels by one step. A 25 mm labeled knot is actually very close to 26 mm.

3.2 Why does a handle bore need to be larger than the knot size?

Example: a handle for a 27 mm knot has a bore of about 28.5–29 mm. First, it makes installation smooth. More importantly, dense Badger knots expand when wet. The gap releases that expansion naturally instead of suppressing it. We've tested this extensively.

Some handles now use funnel-shaped openings—an angled top section to better manage expansion pressure. If you insist on zero clearance, performance loss is small, but the expansion force can crack a thin-walled handle. Don't underestimate it.

3.3 What is "standard LOFT," and should I follow it?

Standard LOFT is a reference point, not an absolute correct value. If you're new, start there. It's set to show the knot's full character and based on years of experience and current market preferences.

But wet shaving is personal. No universal best setting exists. If you prefer fluffier feel or softer backbone, increase LOFT up to 10%. We'll warn you if you approach the knot's limit, and explain what you gain and lose. Small changes of 1–2 mm are safe.

Example: Emperor's LOFT is set low to fix Silvertip's historically weak backbone. If you love traditional Silvertip feel, raise it 2–4 mm.

And LOFT isn't permanent. We use low-temperature silicone. Heat the glued area to about 90°C, and you can remove and reset the knot. Finding your ideal LOFT is part of the journey.

4. Detailed Knot Lineups

4.1 Can you walk me through the Hog Badger knot lineup?

This is our largest category, including: 5th, 7th, The Unsullied, Rorschach, ACE, Manchuria, Tyrant, Elixir, Epoch, Zhuque, and Origin.

We group them into three tiers:

Daily Use: 5th, 7th, ACE, Manchuria

  • ACE and Manchuria meet any demanding user's needs. Balanced. Top recommendation for first-timers. Manchuria uses higher-grade material and performs better overall.
  • 5th and 7th offer great value and entry-level high-end quality. Ideal for daily use without guilt.

Luxury Collection: Tyrant, Zhuque, Origin

  • These three are the market's peak, excelling in one or several areas.
  • Tyrant costs less than Zhuque and Origin due to material rarity, not performance gap. Visually: striking white tips, wide black band. Performance: slightly stronger rebound and smoother feel than Manchuria. Real value is collectability and longer lifespan—thicker hairs, longer tips, minimal bleaching needed.
  • Zhuque and Origin are OUMO's price ceiling. Zhuque tops natural Hog Badger performance; Origin tops finest two-band. Both use the highest-grade hair—extra-long tips, wide black bands, thick shafts—plus our strictest selection. Built for collectors seeking the ultimate.

Specialist Series: The Unsullied, Rorschach, Elixir, Epoch

  • The Unsullied: untreated, strong bristly feel. Intact cuticles produce creamy lather. Less soft than Zhuque.
  • Rorschach: lightly bleached to remove prickliness, retains raw texture. Not as soft as processed knots, not as gritty as untreated. For those who want natural feedback.
  • Elixir: maximum rebound. Thick hairs, low density, pronounced bulb shape. For fans of sharp, linear snap.
  • Epoch: made from Xinjiang Tianshan Badger hair—extremely rare, combines Hog and Dog Badger strengths. Only choice for untreated knot with both elasticity and softness.

4.2 Are Hog Badger knots always the best choice?

They lead in overall capability. Different grades and tuning emphasize specific traits or find balance. Parameters evolve with preferences. For example, 2016–2019 favored dense, strong-backbone knots. We adjust as tastes shift.

4.3 What about Dog Badger knots?

They're less varied because Dog Badger hair is very consistent—less "playability." We offer three models:

  • Silk: value leader, good affordability, slightly lower rebound. Great if you like wide, mushroom-like splay.
  • Emperor: highest-grade Silvertip, traditional luxury benchmark. Plush feel with firm backbone from premium material and density.
  • Kirin: untreated, same grade as Emperor. Soft and smooth with subtle natural grit.

Dog Badger knots are closer to the classic top-tier brush: soft, smooth, luxurious. Hog Badger has taken over the spotlight with finer grading and processing, but Dog Badger's natural silkiness can never be replicated. Genetic limitation.

4.4 Tell me about OUMO's synthetic knots.

Our Super Fiber series is fully controlled in-house—from polymer pellet selection to fiber structure, diameter, blend ratio, and color. We don't just buy what suppliers offer. We build a systematic, traceable synthetic line.

Three models:

  • ST-1: strong backbone, soft with slight texture
  • ST-2: cloud-like ultra-soft, gentler rebound
  • ST-3: combines high rebound and softness, new fiber structure

ST-1 and ST-3 come in two densities. ST-2 is max-density only due to its material parameters.

5. Brush Handle Selection

5.1 How do I choose a brush handle?

Three tiers:

  • Standard ($40–$70): Resin, wood, aluminum, multi-material. Daily use. Excellent value.
  • Master ($100–$180): Stabilized wood, ebonite, reconstituted turquoise, plus finishes like glaze, foil inlay, fluid art, 5-axis carving. Balances usability and collectability.
  • Limited/Flagship ($250+, often $300+): Bronze, titanium, limited ebonite, Chinese lacquer, extreme 5-axis machining, multi-material assembly. Technical ceiling. Collectible value first, practicality second.

For daily use, Standard is enough—it's already artisan-grade. Master adds refinement. Limited is about peak capability. Choose based on your needs. Don't judge a Limited edition's ergonomics against a daily driver—they have different purposes.

6. Final Advice

6.1 Any final advice?

If you've read this far, you'll find the right brush. Trust your preferences, use the framework we've laid out, and enjoy the process.

这是我们最大的类别,包括:5th、7th、The Unsullied、Rorschach、ACE、Manchuria、Tyrant、Elixir、Epoch、Zhuque、Origin。

特种兵系列:The Unsullied、Rorschach、Elixir、Epoch

4.2 Hog Badger

4.3 Dog Badger

  • ST-1:Backbone
