An Ode to Patience: The OUMO Year of the Snake Commemorative Shaving Handle Arrives

The past six months have ushered OUMO into an unprecedented period of intense activity and rapid progression. Since the beginning of 2025, a significant portion of our focus has been dedicated to the meticulous sourcing of new badger hair supplies. This was swiftly followed by the testing of the Epoch series in April and the successive launches of the Exceed-5 and Exceed-6 handles from our "Exceed Series." Subsequently, the development and finalization of the "Dynasty Series" demanded considerable attention, while a core part of our energy was channeled into the "Assassin Razor"—a project that has now entered critical stages of global stocking and tasting events

This list doesn't even encompass numerous undisclosed projects, such as the ceramic handle samples we've been refining since June, the ongoing development of the ST-3, and the iterative improvements to the ST-1 and ST-2 models. It is precisely these parallel undertakings that have led to the commemorative zodiac handle's release being scheduled for now. Please do not mistake this delay for neglect; on the contrary, it stems from our profound respect for this series. We were determined to imbue this handle with the absolute pinnacle of craftsmanship we currently possess.

Our journey with integrating modern technology into traditional craftsmanship began with the Year of the Dragon handle, where we boldly introduced CNC machining for partial or complete fabrication. While a remarkable endeavor, it presented new challenges: once you have glimpsed true mountains, small hills lose their appeal, and the ambition to scale greater heights takes hold. Consequently, we have increasingly incorporated intricate machining into our designs, which inherently extends the production timeline. From the moment the Snake Handle was立项 (initiated), I invested immense time into 3D modeling—the nearly two-week modeling process for the 2024 Dragon handle remains vivid, and the Snake handle's modeling consumed almost an entire month. This was partly due to my insistence on independently completing the modeling (to be perfectly candid, my proficiency with Blender is still a work in progress)

However, we never compromised, adhering strictly to our original design vision to complete this piece. Its complexity far surpasses that of the Dragon handle, posing extreme challenges not only to our modeling skills but also to the subsequent machining programming. We also had to carefully balance the accents, material selection, and overall composition to ensure the focal point remains on the main carving, preventing other elements from becoming distracting.

Truth be told, every time we create a piece that pushes the boundaries of our craftsmanship, numerous difficulties arise. This zodiac handle is precisely constructed from six distinct sections, with each junction utilizing a screw-in structure to enhance overall integrity and durability

Designing the internal architecture for such a complex assembly was a significant challenge. We contemplated simpler solutions, like resin bonding, but that approach feels far too elementary for the OUMO workshop of today—we are no longer the group of novice artisans we were years ago. Through extensive experimentation and adjustment, we ultimately achieved our intended design.

A slight regret is that to accommodate a wider range of knot sizes, particularly for enthusiasts of larger knots, we forewent the glaze technique, opting instead for a simpler color treatment for the accent parts.

The selection of materials for the carved sections involved considerable experimentation as well. We tested stabilized wood, artificial turquoise, aerospace aluminum, 316L stainless steel, titanium alloy, and various resins. Ultimately, we selected H62 brass as the primary material. The reason is multifaceted: complex colors tend to obscure the fine details of the carving; non-metallic materials lack the substantial heft required to complement the carved elements; and white metals fail to convey a sense of opulence. H62 brass, after undergoing bead blasting, acquires a surface texture remarkably similar to gold. In Chinese culture, gold has always symbolized supreme value and nobility, making it an ideal match for a product so deeply rooted in Chinese tradition

Furthermore, to enhance the collectible value, the accent parts on each individual handle feature unique color combinations, ensuring every piece is one-of-a-kind.

It's also worth noting that, consistent with our practice, I designed two distinct prototypes for this launch, intending to decide the final version through a vote. However, the outcome was unexpected: the votes from our internal team and the public poll resulted in a tie. Consequently, I made a decision—both versions will be released.

Therefore, the Year of the Snake Commemorative Handle will be available in two distinct versions. Each version is strictly limited to 12 pieces, amounting to a global total of only 24 handles

I am profoundly confident that this handle will become the most exceptional piece in any collector's assortment—not merely for its intricate form, but also for its unique aesthetic appeal. It truly represents the highest standard of shaving handle craftsmanship available today

Thank you for your time and interest.
